Remember Gaza by Viva Palestina

Salam everyone!

This Sunday, YMP will be doing its bid to help the Palestinian cause and participate in Viva Palestina Malaysia's (formerly COMPLETE Malaysia) Remember Gaza event in Mid Valley MegaMall Center Court at 11 AM. Come & join us to do your part for Palestine!
_____________________________________________________________________

REMEMBER GAZA

December 27th - January 18th marks the first anniversary of the unspeakable brutality committed by the Zionist regime of Israel against the people of Gaza. For over 22 days, Israel dropped bombs, white phosphorous, used airplanes, helicopters, navy ships, tanks, bulldozers and heavily armed soldiers against a defenseless people.

1,400 dead, 5,000 injured, 20,000 homeless & 50,000 displaced. Schools, hospitals, universities, ministries, homes, shops - nothing was spared. The people of Gaza were simply bombed to death.

All around the world civil societies are marking the first anniversary of this cowardly and genocidal crime and Viva Palestina Malaysia (formerly COMPLETE) calls on all Malaysians to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people by doing the following:

1. Display the Palestinian scarf on 27th December everywhere you go. Drape it around yourself, tie it to your bag, display it in your car. Just let it be seen.

2. Boycott the following companies, supporters of the Zionist regime of Israel, from 27th December to 18th January - Nestle, McDonald’s, Coke and Loreal. Do not buy any of their products!

3. Put up Boycott Israel car stickers, available for free. They can be collected from 6, SS1/24A, Kampung Tunku, Petaling Jaya. Or call Jemaimah at 013 231 4596

4. Observe one minute of silence at exactly 12 noon on 27th December. Turn this silence into a deafening roar against the injustice suffered by the Palestinians.

It is highly encouraged that you get together with family and friends on 27th December. Do take pictures and videos of your activities and email them to complete2009@gmail.com. We will be posting them on our website and Facebook. Viva Palestina Malaysia members and volunteers will be at the open court of Mid Valley Shopping Mall at 11 am on 27th December. Do join us.

Gaza is still under a blockade. The attack gave the Palestinian struggle a global dimension and civil societies all around the world are stepping in to bring about a change. In the words of  Abraham Joshua Heschel,

“Few are guilty, but all are responsible.”

Please circulate this email far and wide. Lets get together and remember a people long forgotten by the rest of the world.

Time to Play... ULTIMATE FRISBEE!!!

Salam (peace) folks!!!

Got nothing to do this weekend? Well, come down to Kepong and join YMP in a fun-filled game of Ultimate Frisbee!!!

Ultimate Frisbee is a limited-contact team sport played with a standard flying disc, commonly known as a frisbee. The object of the game is to score points by passing the disc to a player in the opposing end zone, similar to an end zone in American football or rugby. Players may not run while holding the disc. Check out these links:
How to get to Taman Metropolitan? If you are driving from Petaling Jaya, head for the LDP (Lebuhraya Damansara Puchong) towards Kepong. You will pass by 1 Utama and Mutiara Damansara. Continue driving towards the direction of Genting Highlands/Batu Caves and you will reach a toll plaza. Pay the RM1.60 toll and go up the ramp towards MRR2.

Go straight all the way and make a U turn at a roundabout as you exit the highway. Go straight after that and look for the signboard "Taman Metroplitan" before turning into the park. You will encounter a signboard "Kawasan Permainan Layang-Layang" before the park. Layang-layang is the Malay language for kites.

Too chicken to play Ultimate Frisbee but still wanna have fun? No worries! The kite rentals are always available!

There's a lot of running so wear comfortable clothing & shoes. Refreshments will be provided. See ya there!!!

Open House at Titian Kaseh

Assalamualaikum everyone!

On 4 October 2009, YMP held an open house together with the children at the Titian Kaseh Orphange in Kuala Lumpur. We had such a fulfilling afternoon with them! It was so enjoyable to see the kids laughing, buzzing with excitement, climbing and jumping over all of us. They clearly had a jolly good time, Alhamdulillah.

The open house started at 12.30 with a round of introductions. MashaAllah, their enthusiasm was just so contagious! The children got excited just by counting numbers! So when it came time to give out balloons, streamers, and ribbons to decorate, the atmosphere was one of chaotic excitement to say the least.

We then took a break after 1.30 for prayers followed by lunch, which in itself was a spectacle. We had Lamb and 'mandi' rice, which is basically the lamb and rice cooked together in all it's juicy goodness! :-) And of course the Raya spread; satay, rendang, ketupat, and potato salad. The food was glorious, MashaAllah.

After everyone settled down, we played Pass the Parcel. The younger kids participated in the activities. The older ones (15 yrs old onwards) were naturally too 'cool' to play so they stayed inside the house. Everytime the parcel stopped, someone had to answer a question or do a challenge/ dare/ silly dance. One of the children volunteered our very own Abang Amin to walk like a duck, and meow like a cat. Lovely!

For the finale, the children gathered and gave a Dikir Barat performance for us. It was the highlight of the day! Even Abang Zuhri joined in!

At the end of this, we all came back feeling very warm inside. Zul and Zuhri would've probably had to adopt a few kids had they stayed longer, coz the children just love them!

YMP would like to give a special thank you to the sponsors and donators for making this event possible. Without which, it would've been difficult to organize. Alhamdulillah.

Now on to the next one! :-D

The Call for Unity

Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), this coming Sunday, 21st June, we're going to have a special get together with a special speaker! We have been given the amazing opportunity to host a talk with Bro. Muhammad Umar from the UK-based Ramadhan Foundation, so we're sharing this opportunity with you lovely peeps!

Do you think Unity that goes across the board; regardless of race, religion, or culture, is important and relevant today? Can it bring a positive effect on the world? Or is it just a utopic idea created by idealists? Whatever your thoughts on this issue, we'd like you to share it with us this very Sunday! And if you have any questions, our guest speaker will be more than willing to answer them. The details are in the poster so hope to see you all this Sunday insyaAllah (God willing)!

P/s
: This Sunday's VENUE will be DIFFERENT than our normal Hangout as it'll be in Duta Nusantara (map). When you are there, tell the guard that you are going to the Duta Nusantara Clubhouse. Anything, just give Cat a buzz.

P/ss: Refreshments will be provided so PLEASE RSVP ASAP so that we can gauge the numbers. :) Also, IF (no obligations seriously!) you'd like to add something to the table, you're more than welcome to BUT due to the requests of the Duta Nusantara management, we have to keep it clean and simple so finger foods would be ideal. Thanks!

Brotherhood!

Salam (Peace) All!

Alright, this morning we had some not so good news about our original topic for this Sunday (When in doubt, listen to your heart). Sister Azra's really sorry she had to postpone it but don't be sad though as we're arranging for the topic to be done in one of our get togethers in June insyaAllah (God Willing). Allah (swt) is Great however, coz we've got an equally good, if not better, topic for our get together this Sunday, 31st May '09! :)

This Sunday, we're attempting to discuss the concept of Brotherhood and its relevance in today's world. We often hear how people have become so involved in their own world nowadays that they don't have time for "brotherhood" and unity anymore. It's a concept of the past some may say and it's impossible to apply it in today's world. Others say the only way for world peace is through brotherhood. No matter what your opinions are, we'd like you to share it with us this very Sunday!

We'll have a special guest speaker who has managed to make time for us amidst his busy busy schedule and the short notice. He is Dr Musa Nordin, the Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics at the Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS). His extensive profile can't be said in a few lines here, so to know more about the man, check out this website:
http://www.noor.org.sa/mode/en/SpeakerBio.php?SpeakerID=10

Details are in the poster so check it out and as usual, PLEASE RSVP to Cat at 016-697 3097 or leave a comment below! :)

You, Me & Planet Earth

Assalamu'alaikum,

“The creation of the heavens and the earth is far greater than the creation of mankind. But most of mankind do not know it.” Qur’an, 40:56

“It is He who has appointed you as viceroys in the earth.” Qur’an, 6:165

Allah has described mankind as His Guardians on earth. It is therefore our responsibility to take care of other creatures and the earth itself. Yet how many of us take these duties seriously as an integral part of our way of life?

Most of us probably know that the coming 28th March 09 is marked for Earth Hour. (Click the image to visit the Earth Hour website)

VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.

Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm.

--------------------------------------------------------------

In conjunction with this, we'd like to share some information on our responsibilities as Muslims towards the natural environment. A good website that provides this info is http://ifees.org.uk/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1

Abdur Raheem Green has a page dedicated to this issue on his blog: http://www.islamsgreen.org/islams_green/going_green/

The Power of One

Salam (Peace)

How are you all doing?! It's been a long time since our last gathering and we're all excited to see y'all again! We sincerely apologise for the 3 weeks plus hiatus as we were in the midst of restructuring YMP so that we can provide better get togethers and funtivities just for you guys! :)

This Sunday, we'll be discussing on the much thought about topic regarding the true Power of our Creator, together with Ustaz Hussein Yee.

Ever heard of the saying, "As long as you have faith, it will happen"? Well, do you really believe in that? Is it true that it just takes faith and everything will happen the way we want without us even lifting a finger? Or does it all depend on the sweat on our backs to make things happen and nothing else? It is a dog-eat-dog world out there isn't it?

Well, if any of these thoughts ever cross your mind, this Sunday is the perfect opportunity for you to find out all the answers and more insyaAllah (God willing)!

Details are in the poster so please RSVP to Cat at 016-697 3097 alright? we need to know how many people are coming so that there's enough food for everyone!

p/s: As always, there's NO dresscodes so just come as u feel comfy

The Plant: A Lesson for Every Believer

Salam (Peace)!

Here's a beautiful reminder for all us, taken from here:

Bismillah,

The believers contemplate on the ayaat of Allah that have been left upon the earth, and only they see the creation around them as ayaat.

Allah ta’ala says,

“And you see the earth barren and lifeless, but when We pour down rain on it, it is stirred (to life), it swells, and it sprouts forth every kind of beautiful growth (in pairs).” (22:5)

What is the lesson for the believer in this?

Allah ta’ala reminds us that this plant is an ayah. Whenever we see a plant, we should remember the resurrection.

A simple plant is a reminder of the Day of Judgment for the believer.

Why?

Just as the earth will اهْتَزَّتْ,shake, رَبَتْ, swell and rise, أَنبَتَتْ, and sprout— on the Day of Judgment the earth will shake, then swell then sprout…but a plant will not be sprouting from the earth, rather it will be the companions of the grave: us.

Allah ta’ala describes the disbelievers saying:

وَلَهُمْ أَعْيُنٌ لَّا يُبْصِرُونَ بِهَا

“and they have eyes, wherewith they see not.” (7:179)

Those who do not believe in Allah see a plant and nothing else, but those with emaan and hearts that understand see an ayah about resurrection.

We ask Allah ta’ala to make us among those who take heed of His ayaat, Ameen.

Let's Talk About Gaza

Salam (Peace) all...

The attack on Gaza has made an impact on the world.

However, some still have mixed feelings about the Palestinian conflict. Should they care? Why? It doesn't affect them, so why should they bother? It's so far away anyways.. we have bigger problems at home. Solve those first before thinking about something on the other side of the world.

So,

This is a simple 'open circle' for everyone to share their views on this, in support of or protesting or confused.

Because, after all that has happened the past few weeks, it's good we gather our thoughts and reflect. After 22 days of massacre, it only brings relief it doesn't go on any longer. But even as we "speak", the attacks have started again.

How did the 'war' make you feel? How has it affected you?

As Malaysians.

As
Youths.

As Muslims.

As human beings.

No matter who you are, please come and share your views. It'll be a moderated open discussion. There'll be no speaker or lecture. We wanna hear from YOU!

*This is an open discussion, but please be reminded to be tactful and respectful. TQ! :)

Details are as follows:

When?  Sunday, 1st Feb 2009, 2 PM

Where? YMP Hangout; 43, Pinggir Zaaba, TTDI, KL

D/code? NONE! Come as u feel comfy. :)

Please RSVP to:

Cat (016-697 3097)

Hope to see u all on Sunday! :)

UNITY FOR HUMANITY

Wow, what a year it has been so far! And it’s not even a full January yet.

We had the great opportunity to introduce ourselves in the BIGGEST YOUTH CONVENTION – YOUTH ’09. It was a wonderful experience for us. Despite having to compete with the ‘Battle of the Bands’ that was happening at the same time, we managed to draw a crowd. It was good to be able to reach out to others and show what we’re all about.

All of us met up early on that Sunday morning, nervous but excited at the same time. We had our marketing strategy ready; a ‘sandwich board’. It was hilarious! Whatever embarrassment we initially felt about giving out flyers to strangers was thrown out the door. I mean, what better way to overcome a small embarrassment than to have an even bigger embarrassment eh?

Lo and behold, it was a big hit! We got passerby’s to sign at the back of our Sandwich Board, in support of our theme ‘Unity for Humanity’. It was awesome!

“Hi there! We’re having a campaign, ‘Unity for Humanity’. Please support our cause. Sign at the back.”

We wanted to make our presence felt, and I think we really achieved that. Haha! Good job guys! Thank you, dear volunteers!

Community Hall, 2pm

Adam and Ashaari were our MC and Game Conductor.

Our 1st game was very simple. Everyone was given some simple questions. But there’s a catch. You need to approach a stranger to assist you.

“Find someone who plays a musical instrument”

“Find someone with a name beginning with a vowel.”

“Who’s a left hander?”

Simple, yet very profound. We were forced to come out of our comfort zone, and strike up a conversation with a stranger. How often do we do this? How often do we even smile at them?

Our 2nd game was quite tricky. But equally meaningful too.

We were given a scenario. We had to go up on stage, one by one, fix a pose, and create that picture. Everyone has to complement each other to make the scene work.

There’s a group squatting down, eating. Another group was playing basketball. 2 friends were chasing each other. And so on so forth. Yup! This is a “Waktu rehat” in school. It was a load of fun.

It’s very often we start out having preconceived ideas about something. But it takes a lot of patience, knowledge, understanding and compromise to create a harmonious ‘picture’. Everyone has to work together.

In today’s time, everyone build walls around ourselves, keeping everyone at ‘arms length’. Fear, cynicism, and doubt slowly creep into our lives creating a fragile community. Let us break down these walls and open our hearts. Learn, understand and be patient with one another. InsyaAllah, the world will be a better place.

About Us

YMP consists of youths age ranging 17-30 with one common ground: In the pursuit of learning about Islam deeper. Hence the inception of this group in early 2007.

We serve as a platform for the youths to learn from each other while sourcing out from the wiser and older ones who are well-versed in Islam.

Fortnightly meetings are organized in venues around Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In each gathering, we invite one or two experienced speakers to impart their knowledge on us, the youths, regarding Islam. It encourages intellectual discussions and the posing of burning questions that the youths have always had in minds.

We are not restricted to Muslims youths only. It is open for participation for anyone interested. You can see a mélange of people coming from the gathering; from the scarfed ones to the pierced ones to the inked ones.

“YMP has always seen itself as being different. We want to break away from the dogma that comes with anything Islamic. We want to propagate that it’s ok to be a practicing Muslim in today’s time. It’s fun and it’s cool to be Muslims.”
-Amin-
